In Dr. Brain: Puzzleopolis, you are a heroic lab assistant to a friendly brain-in-a-jar named Dr. Brain (of course). In fact, you are one of Dr. Brain's two clones--he created you and your twin to help around the lab, but something went wrong with Conn, the other clone. He's evil, and he's trying to destroy Puzzleopolis! Your assignment is to stop him any way you can.

To fight the evil clone, you'll need weapons and gadgets. You get these by stalking the streets of the city, looking for puzzle spots. When you solve one of the brain teasers at a puzzle node, you get a gadget or a helper. Some of the cool things you'll find are a brilliant chemist, a flash ray gun, a satellite control device, and a helpful organ grinder monkey. But beware--you'll be going up against Conn's gadgets, and he can find just as much awesome stuff: a Ninja, a mutation ray gun, and smoke bombs, to name a few. Each time you fight Conn, you each lose a few gadgets, so you have to go out and solve more brain puzzles to power up again. You're in a race against time as Conn smashes his way through Puzzleopolis, wrecking the town!

The great science fiction interface of Puzzleopolis is just right for kids ages 10 and older. The characters are smart, funny, and cartoonlike, and the story is engagingly addictive. As for the logic, spatial relations, and thinking puzzles, we found even the "Logical Novice" level to be a challenge, especially the first time through. Every time you solve a puzzle at a particular node, the difficulty level goes up a bit, and you can adjust the overall difficulty level all the way up to "Puzzle Grand Master." With a huge number of possible outcomes, Puzzleopolis is interesting enough to keep kids coming back for more. --Therese Littleton

This two-disc pack is chock full of activities designed to help your kindergartner learn critical thinking skills and master a variety of curriculum-based topics. As always, the world created by Maurice Sendak's Little Bear character is full of the gentle surprises and imaginative adventures that young children adore. This time around, kids can go camping with Little Bear; along the way, there's constellations to look at and count, fish to sort, and a beaver dam to rebuild.

The variety of activities on the second disc is tremendous, with origami flowers, game designing, and terrarium building just a few of the new things waiting to be discovered. There's even a simple program that allows children to paint on screen: a wonderful introduction to the world of art made possible with computers. Parents will appreciate the printable progress reports, multiple difficulty levels, and Smart Helpers that prevent frustration and personalize each adventure with your child's name. With a total of more than fifty different educational games, there's plenty of creative participation for all the Little Bear fans at your house. --Jill Lightner
