Tired of using the same old "pick-a-card" tricks and pulling
bunnies from hats? This unique educational kit combines two of the most enduring
fascinations of kids of all ages: magic and ancient Egypt. An 80-page
illustrated booklet provides tips on practicing, "pattering," and
performing any type of magic, from magician Bob Friedhoffer. Most importantly,
the booklet gives an introduction to the role of magic in ancient Egyptian life,
as well as clear instructions on how to build and conduct magic tricks recorded
in ancient Egyptian texts. These include "Djedi's ever-living heads,"
"King Sneferu's magic bead," "the Nile water of
invisibility," "Pharaoh becomes Ra," "restore the torn
restored papyrus," and "hero's never-empty bottle." Along the
way, the booklet painlessly imparts a surprising wealth of information on
ancient Egyptian history and culture. Bye-bye bunnies! --Rebecca Hughes

Here's a gift item for that dinosaur devotee who has everything--an
accurate replica of a dinosaur claw! This exact reproduction duplicates the
sickle claw from the hind foot of the Utahraptor, a type of dinosaur recently
identified in the western United States. (The Utahraptor is a close cousin of
those nasty Velociraptors that chased the kids in the kitchen in Jurassic
Park.) The claw in question is about 7 inches by 3 inches and is made from
lightweight bronze-colored metal. A small information folder gives the history
of the Utahraptor, and a display stand lets you show your claw to the world. A
great visual aid for a class studying dinosaurs or an unusual paperweight for a
desk (perhaps for someone trying to claw her way up the corporate ladder). --Marcie

Everyone knows the frighteningly swift, meat-eating velociraptor,
which was featured in the movies Jurassic Park and Dinosaur. With
this set, a kid can pretend to be a famous paleontologist by unearthing a
perfect velociraptor skeleton from the 6-by-4-inch "rock," weighing
almost 2 pounds, that's included in the kit. Open up the neon orange toolbox and
use the included tools (safety goggles, a hammer, a chisel, and a brush) to
dislodge the plastic "bones." Then reconstruct the skeleton on the
included base. The next thing you know, the American Museum of Natural History
will be inviting budding paleontologists to talk about their recent discoveries.

If Little Red Riding Hood thought the wolf had big teeth, imagine how
she'd react to a saber tooth cat. Skullduggery has created a life-size replica
of a saber tooth cat skull that was found in the La Brea Tar Pits in Los
Angeles. At 6 inches long, the swordlike upper canines of this animal are almost
half the length of its entire skull! The jaws of the saber tooth cat opened 90
degrees so that its canines could plunge into victims' necks. Extinct since the
end of the Ice Age (12,000 years ago), this cat preyed on huge animals,
including elephants and mastodons. Cast in durable gypsum cement, the skull is
13 inches long, 8 inches wide, and 12 inches high. Included are an 8-page
information booklet and an oak display base with acrylic post for mounting. --Louise
