NOVA takes viewers on an incredible voyage into the microworld of the
human body to explore The Universe Within. Breathtaking sports photography
captures amazing athletes in action, but the real action happens inside,
revealed by microphotography that is in the style of NOVA's classic documentary
of human development, The Miracle of Life. The program covers three incredible
team efforts: the coordination of muscles, bones, heart and circulatory system
that makes Mike Powell the world's greatest long jumper; the digestive dynamo
that turns a simple sandwich eaten by five-time Olympic gold medalist Bonnie
Blair into raw energy for a blistering sprint down the ice; and the ultimate
event, the development of a new human life inside track star Karen Hatchett.Click

Will we or our children live in sleek designer bodies with chrome
eyeballs? Check out Future Body, from the Discovery Channel's Science
of the Impossible series, and decide for yourself. Through snazzy high-tech
graphics and interviews with physicians, roboticists, and "extropians,"
the producers show that many of the advantages we take for granted
today--artificial hips, pacemakers, cosmetic plastic surgery, transplantation,
and such--would have seemed miraculous 100 years ago but are merely setting the
stage for new developments to come. You'll see a surgeon implanting a microchip
into the eye of a blind woman in the hopes of giving her rudimentary sight and
hear from a passionate advocate for moving our consciousness fully into a
technological shell. Wildly entertaining and thought provoking, Future Body
will make you think twice the next time you stub your toe. --Rob LightnerClick

What an amazing amalgamation of chemicals we humans are! Dr. Robert Winston's
visceral exploration of the physical processes of the body is an enlightening, exciting,
and sometimes startling testimonial to just how complicated an organism the human animal
is. From the graceful opening shot of naked people ages 1 to 100 standing in a row in a
forest, to the painful last days of a man dying of cancer, this video will make you regard
the human body with an awesome new respect.
Often using himself as a subject, Dr. Winston examines how the physiology of
our bodies works. Tiny, fiber-optic cameras make a journey down an intestinal track look
like a ride on a candy-pink roller coaster. Advanced medical imaging techniques used by
the filmmakers make it possible to see and understand the body in a whole new way, such as
when a 3-D image of Dr. Winston's head is sliced open to reveal the miniscule bones of the
inner ear.
Yet for all its advanced technology, the series does not neglect the
"human" side of our bodies. Dr. Winston pours buckets of salt water into the
ocean as he marvels that we are the only animals that cry. The series, shot over a period
of two years, is loosely framed around the lives of a group of people who narrate their
emotional responses to the physical changes their bodies are undergoing. In one episode, a
young girl goes through puberty, in another an elderly couple reflects on their aging
bodies. Perhaps the most moving scene is that of the birth of a baby, shown from inside
the mother. It is almost like you are taking this most difficult journey with the infant
as he travels toward the beginning of his life.
Intimate Universe gives us a glimpse at what our bodies are doing at any
given moment, whether at work or at play. You will come away from this video with a new
appreciation for how much is happening right inside you, and how effortless the efficient
machinery of our bodies makes it seem. --Michelle Riggen

Description
The human body is a wondrously complex machine made of flesh, bone,
muscles, organs, blood vessels and highly specialized systems that function
together to sustain life. This fascinating part of The Human Body series
examines this incredible machine, from simple cells, to DNA, the bodys
building blocks of life, to the major systems and organs.
Using animation combined with live-action footage and commentary from
medical specialists, this program illustrates how the major systems and organs
function. Viewers learn how the reproductive system generates new life and how
the stomach, intestines and other organs of the digestive system convert solid
matter into the fuel of life. We also discover how the lungs and respiratory
system take in oxygen that sustains life, and how the heart and circulatory
system connect all body systems, providing a delivery system for the oxygen. In
addition, the program explores the lymphatic, immune and other supporting
systems. Finally, viewers explore the structure and functions of our skin, the
bodys largest organ, which protects us from the outside environment.

Infused with a healthy awe of nature's handiwork, this film is a crash course
in physiology. In just 60 minutes the video travels through every inch of the human body,
highlighting the various engineering feats accomplished in the course of everyday
activity. Tiny cameras expose the forest of taste buds on the tip of a tongue, the
cavernous pores in a fingertip, and the eerie clenching action of vocal chords. While the
live-action scenes are a bit dated, the visual effects created by x-rays, microscopes, and
time-lapse photography are fascinating. --Claire Campbell

Still startlingly beautiful after several years, Nova's The Miracle
of Life records human conception for the first time on film, and much more. Living,
functioning reproductive systems are laid bare to the camera, and there is so much to
explore and absorb that Nova's expert guidance is much needed and appreciated. The
viewer follows an egg from its follicular development in an ovary, through the delicate,
flowery fallopian tube for fertilization, and on to the uterus for development and
eventual birth. Likewise, we follow the shorter journey of millions of sperm as they
develop and strive mightily to reach the egg. (There isn't a man alive who can watch
intraurethral footage without squirming--see for yourself!) Photographer Lennart Nilsson
has shown us something profoundly beautiful and yet has left its fundamental mystery
intact. The Miracle of Life is a rarity: a documentary that is also art. --Rob

An extensive review course in human anatomy is offered in typically
irreverent manner by the Standard Deviants, a cast of energetic young performers
who strive mightily to present very serious material in an utterly absurd, and
therefore memorable, manner. One cast member offers a disclaimer that this tape
isn't a substitute for a student attending class, adding, "Think of us as
academic Hamburger Helper." That might actually overstate the case, as the
extensive outline of anatomy on this video has been prepared with the
cooperation of very reliable academic authorities. The material begins with the
basics of anatomical positioning (knowing your anterior from your posterior) and
moves to the skeletal system, and then we're off and running through all the
bones, onto the muscular system, the nervous system, and the sensory organs.
Throughout the presentation the young performers engage in skits that are often
labored and totally silly, but that's the whole idea. The principle of this
mnemonic device is that a wacky image is easier to remember than dry words on
the page of a textbook, and so the Standard Deviants aren't afraid to get
ridiculous in the cause of making hard science memorable. --Robert J.

Did you know that antlers help an animal regulate its body tempature?
Have you ever seen how ribs function to accommodate the movement of the lungs?
Do you know which animal has the strongest jaws, the most developed forelimbs,
the most powerful legs? Skeleton, part of the Eyewitness video
series, has these and many, many more facts about the toughest part of our
bodies.
Skeleton is an ideal introduction to anatomical science for young
viewers. Its visuals are fresh and interesting, its documentary footage is
sharp, and Martin Sheen's narration is quite effective. Budding scientific minds
will be fascinated by how our skeletons maintain bodily harmony, protect our
internal systems, and give us balance and stability. This is another well-done

A mysterious perfume. A mouth-watering meal. An ardent kiss. A
stirring song. A radiant painting. Our senses are a source of inexhaustible
pleasure as well as endless information. Inspired by the bestseller A Natural
History of the Senses by poet, author, adventurer and sensory epicure Diane
Ackerman, Mystery of the Senses is a vivid blend of science and imagery,
literature and folklore, history and personal adventure. In five one-hour
programs, this special NOVA miniseries celebrates each of the five senses -
hearing, smell, taste, touch and vision - through Ackerman's unique perspective.
"To really have a full 'sense' of life," Ackerman insists, "we
need to understand how our senses work - their purpose, range and richness, and
think about how they reveal the world to us and fill us with endless
pleasures."Click

Millions of men are affected by it. Everyone is buzzing about the hot
new pill for it. But when it comes to the condition itself, no one wants to talk
about it. Until now. Meet some astonishingly candid men, and their partners, as
NOVA offers a revealing look at erectile dysfunction: its causes, its
life-shattering effects, and the amazing progress science has made in treating
it over the last 20 years. Follow some intensely personal true stories: A
24-year-old Bosnian immigrant with a shrapnel injury who thought he could never
make love to his wife again. A hard-driving lawyer whose cardiac-related sexual
dysfunction drove him to thoughts of suicide. A newly married elderly couple
determined to enjoy a physically intimate life. Step behind the scenes and
witness the work of medical specialists who have made possible some of the most
rapid treatment advances this century, from cumbersome pumping devices to penile
implants, home injections, and now simple oral medications that were undreamed
of a few years ago. For those who have benefited from these treatments, the
result has been nothing short of life-changing. It's like a new experience, says
a woman whose husband survived prostate cancer. We're like a couple of kids just
starting out again.
